What's the difference between a Pano x-ray and regular bitewing check-up x-rays?
When you visit the dentist, you might hear terms like Pano x-ray and bitewing x-rays being thrown around. But what exactly are they, and how do they differ?
Pano x-ray:
A Pano x-ray, short for panoramic x-ray, is a single image that captures the entire mouth in one shot. It provides a broad view of the teeth, jaws, sinuses, and surrounding structures. This type of x-ray is useful for detecting issues like impacted teeth, jaw disorders, and bone abnormalities.
Regular bitewing x-rays:
Bitewing x-rays, on the other hand, focus on a specific area of the mouth. They capture the upper and lower teeth in one section of the mouth to show how the teeth fit together when you bite down. These x-rays are commonly used to detect cavities between teeth and bone loss due to gum disease.
So, in summary, while Pano x-rays give an overall view of the entire mouth, bitewing x-rays provide detailed images of specific areas for a closer look at tooth and gum health. Both types of x-rays play essential roles in helping dentists diagnose and treat oral health issues effectively.
Next time you're at the dentist and hear these terms, you'll have a better understanding of what they mean and how they contribute to your oral health care.
