What Are Retainers?
After you are done with your orthodontic treatment, you will move to a retainer to maintain your results. Your retainer can protect the investment you made in time and money with orthodontic treatments by keeping your teeth in their new location while your jaw and gums stabilize. To serve the needs of our patients, San Ramon Family Dental in San Ramon, CA offers many high-quality retainer options, including a fixed or removable retainer. Dr. Rupam Khanna will guide you in the process and discuss your options.
What Should I Expect with Retainers?
Once your orthodontics are taken off your teeth, you can be fitted for your retainer. We'll take an impression of your teeth and send it to a dental lab. Once your retainer is ready around 1 – 2 weeks later, we'll schedule an office visit. During this appointment, Dr. Khanna will ensure your retainer fits comfortably before sending you home. She will also tell you when you have to wear your retainer, as well as how to wash and store it.

San Ramon Family Dental Reviews
Excellent service - knowledgeable, efficient, helpful and professional. I needed a composite replacement; the Dr and the entire office made the process quick and easy.
My first visit was to repair a broken crown. From the first phone call to the actual procedure, EVERYONE was happy to be there and extremely friendly and efficient. I was also very impressed by the xray and digital scanning tech… top notch. I am definitely recommending San Ramon Family Dental to everyone I know.
Dr.Zhu was, kind, patient, and very calming for me who has always been super anxious at the dentist. After my procedure I let hi. K ow it was one of the best experiences I have had. The staff here is more like family since I have been going there for so long. I would choose to see Dr Zhu again
An Extraordinary Dentist Who Truly CaresDr. Khanna is, hands down, one of the most skillful, compassionate, and patient healthcare professionals I’ve ever met. From the very first appointment, it was clear she genuinely puts her patients first. What stood out the most is how much she responds with care, not just clinically but emotionally too. I came to her with a lot of dental trauma, and instead of brushing it off, she went above and beyond to make me feel safe and supported. She even invested in a very high-end scanner—not a small expense—specifically to make my experience less stressful and more precise. That kind of dedication is rare and says everything about her passion for her work and her patients well-being.If you’re looking for a dentist who combines cutting edge technology with a truly human touch, look no further. I feel incredibly lucky to have found her.Christina P

Frequently Asked Questions
How long will I need to wear a retainer?
After you finish your orthodontic treatment, you'll need to wear your retainers all day, only removing them to eat, brush, and floss your teeth for about 4 – 6 months. After about two years, you can probably start wearing your retainer only at night. You can typically wear your retainer every other day, two years after that. When you visit our office, we'll continue to check your retainer to ensure it's holding up properly. We will also check your teeth to ensure the retainers are doing what they should.
How do I care for my retainer?
It's generally pretty easy to care for your retainer, and it's really as easy as brushing your teeth. Simply brush it under warm water one time a day. If you choose, you can do a quick soak in mouthwash, which will help further prevent bacteria growth. If you're not wearing your retainer, we advise keeping it stored properly in its case.
What happens if I lose my retainer?
If you lose your retainer, call our San Ramon, CA office as soon as possible. We can have a replacement made for you.
